As editors at a beauty magazine we are regularly bombarded with press releases, phone calls and samples of every new product on the market. In order to be responsible editors we feel the need to test these products before writing about them. Due to this commitment, I can honestly say that my body has become a walking laboratory. At any given time you’ll find me with at least three new products on my person - from cellulite cream to lip gloss to shaving gel.
My most recent experiment focused on something all red-blooded women seek: the perfect mascara. (Note: I have not tried any of the new vibrating mascaras that Stephanie Quadri blogged about last week but they sound very cool!) Over the last few months I applied different brands of mascara to each eye and asked my panel of oh-so-savvy co-workers which looked best. (Keep in mind that I like my lashes long and separated so this test was based on that result.) Interestingly enough, the two top contenders are at vastly different price points. The winners for length and definition are Chanel Inimitable (available at Nordstrom, Neiman’s, Dillard’s) and Wet and Wild Mega Lash (CVS). I was actually surprised at how many good mascaras there really are out there. Since we are all unique and have different lashes, some of the runners-up may actually work better for you. Here they are in no particular order: Guerlain’s Le2 de Guerlain mascara (Nordstrom, Neiman’s), Prescriptives Here To Stay 24-Hour Longwear mascara (Nordstrom, Neiman’s, Dillard’s, Macy’s), Stila MAJOR major lash (Sephora), TIGI Eyes Love It! (Toni&Guy salons) and for those of you who want a more dramatic look, DiorShow is always a winner (Nordstrom, Neiman’s). This is by no means a complete list. I have not tried every mascara out there (although I would love to) but it’s a good start. If you have any that you love be sure to let us know!
Yay for guinea pigs!
I’m a fan of the Cover Girl VolumeExact Mascara–love that no-clump brush. Also a fan of the price.
@Katie- same for me. L-O-V-E, love the stuff. I can’t get on the Lash Blast train because the wand is too fat and weird & won’t get in my outer eye corners. The Volume Exact (maroon tube) is perfection. I even got a two pack at Target for under $10. Can’t be it!
I always use waterproof, it is the only thing which holds the curl in my lashes.
I use The Lash Blast in waterproof. This is the one with Drew Barrymore in the ads?
But because of the waterproof I have to use remover so BiFical by Lancome or Almay is it for me to get it off.
I did branch out last time and try the Lash Blast mascara. I agree with Amanda that the wand is too fat–hard to maneuver. And, at least in my experience, it was more clumpy than the Volume Exact. I might be heading to Target tonight for the two-pack.
I use the CoverGirl Lash Exact (purple, plastic-encased tube) and I adore it. I think those no-mess, plastic brushes (rather than the fiber brushes) are the future of mascara. The first drugstore brand that I saw using that brush was Max Factor, but now it’s been picked up by several other companies. The only fiber-based brush I like is Maybelline’s Lash Discovery; the “mini-brush” is thin and easy to maneuver.
I bought the Chanel Inimitable one day and then some cheapo Loreal mascara at the grocery store a week later. Although the Chanel mascara was ultra-expensive and works fine, I always opt for the Loreal Telescopic mascara ($6 or so). It does a better job of making my lashes ultra long, while keeping them separated.
I’m partial to Maybelline’s Sky High Curves. It’s pretty cheap, and it gets the job done.
