’80s Fashion Flashback: School Ties

Tim Rogers87D Magazine executive editor Tim Rogers sent me this photo along with the following comments: “I don’t know what to say. It was 1987. I was clearly the coolest kid at Cistercian.” Poor, poor Cistercian.

’80s Fashion Flashback: Hello, Baby Blue

Evan Grant2You might know Evan Grant as that baseball guru over on InsideCorner. But did you know he was such a fashion plate? Here he is donning a smorgasbord of pastel circa 1987. You can’t really tell from the photo, but Evan says that center stripe on his shirt was a lovely shade of sunflower yellow. Don’t forget to send in your own 1980s photos so I can post them for all the world to see! Also, in case you’re not keeping up with the comments, please note that fellow ’80s fashion victim Jay Jerrier of Cane Rosso pizza is offering up a free Cane Rosso hat or t-shirt to the person who sends in the most embarrassing pic by the end of Friday.

’80s Fashion Flashback: Umbro Nation

flashbackThere’s really only one thing to say about this picture from 1989: two-tone Umbro shorts. You know you remember those things. That’s co-worker Jen Maki in the blue and red Umbros looking all sporty. Can’t say this was a trend I ever picked up. I was too busy making sure my multiple pieces of hideous jewelry matched my equally hideous outfit.

’80s Fashion Flashback: Big Bangs Theory

1987Oh, how I love this 1987 picture of D Empire co-worker Jennifer Hayes (right) and her friend Sherry. Jen decided to let her hair down while Sherry went for the banana-clip look, but both, surely, used copious amounts of White Rain on those righteous bangs. L.A. Guns forever!

Sylvie Chantecaille, Woman Behind Prescriptives and Founder of Chantecaille, will be at Neiman Marcus on Saturday

Chantecaille_whaleIt is rare these days that the founder of a cosmetic company is still around, choosing each palette for every season and visiting the labs and spas, making sure each product and treatment is up to par. But Sylvie Chantecaille of Chantecaille is. This amazing makeup/skincare/fragrance line relies on ingredients plucked from nature and chosen through scientific research to create luxurious products that are good for skin and the environment (like the whale palette we used in D Beauty) and make you look beautiful. The eye shadows are creamy, the fragrances therapeutic, and the skincare miraculous. And the woman behind it all will be at Neiman Marcus on Saturday, helping customers get in touch in products and choose the best foundation colors. To be part of Sylvie’s personal appearance, head to Neiman Marcus at NorthPark Saturday, September 12 from 11 am to 4 pm in the Level 1 cosmetics area.

’80s Fashion Flashback: Class Act

80s class photoHere’s my friend Michelle (front row, second from left) in a school picture from back in the day. She’s sporting the curious combo of white Keds, white socks, AND white tights. Also note her classmate on the far right with his rolled-up khakis and red boat shoes. Man, we liked to roll things up in the ’80s! If you look closely, you can see a Coke shirt in the mix: second row, second from right.

’80s Fashion Flashback: Material Girl

maryBefore Mary Poe was D’s corporate marketing director, she was a serious party girl. Just look at her back in 1987 all decked out in full-on Madonna gear. You can’t see them, but Mary remembers that she’s wearing jellies on her feet, and she’s pretty sure that’s her dad’s striped tie around her neck. The one white lace glove, however, is what really pulls the ensemble together.

Valencia Fashion Week: Tonuca

Black & blue at Tonuca.

’80s Fashion Flashback: A Star Is Born

Star SearchIn 1987, Dallas-raised musician David Slater was the male vocalist champ on Star Search. That’s him in the middle next to dear old Ed McMahon. But let’s be honest. That blue and black blazer with the rolled-up sleeves is the real star here. And his competitor’s get-up is none too shabby either.

’80s Fashion Flashback: Fruit Cocktail

80scandyDallasDirt digger Candy Evans sent me this photo with the subject line “What was I thinking?” I don’t know, Candy, I just don’t know. This outfit takes matchy-matchy to a whole new level. But you know what? It’s awesome. Totally awesome. Let’s see what else you got, kids. Still waiting to see a Coca-Cola shirt!
