Native Texans have never needed a reason to hike their hair (after all, the higher the hair, the closer to God), but now that the trend is in, everybody’s going big. The look, however, is often easier dreamed than done. I have long, straight, heavy hair, so adding volume is a challenge. I’ve tried just about everything out there, from shampoos and conditioners to different brushes and styling products, all with disappointing results. Needless to say, I was a skeptic when I came across Root 66 Max Volume, Giovanni Organic Hair Care’s “directional root lifting spray.” I tried it last week (sprayed it into my roots, then flipped my hair to dry upside down for extra va-va-voom), and I was so Barbarella—in a good way. My lofty locks stayed put all night, a truly monumental achievement in my life. And the next day, the ‘do still had some bounce. The greatest part, the 8.5 oz. bottle retails for less than $10. With hat’s so hot for fall and winter, it’s a must to save your hair from hat head.

Update: You can purchase Giovanni Organic’s Root 66, plus a slew of other products from the line, at Central Market.
It’s possible you’ve seen Marnie Rocks in InStyle, PaperCity, or Lucky magazines. Well, now you can see the goods in person at Houston designer Marnie Greenwood’s new shop in Preston Center. In addition to her jewelry line (like this zodiac pendant, part of her new collection), Greenwood’s wares include super-cute bags, scarves, rain gear, and kids’ stuff. Greenwood’s got quite a following in Hollywood, so if you ever wanted to accessorize like a starlet, this is the way to do it.
Hair is our greatest accessory, so it’s no surprise that this town is full of chic, upscale salons. This Wednesday, we welcome another one. Michelle Patrick Salons, the first Paul Mitchell Focus Salon in Dallas, is opening on Cedar Springs, promising stylists who can cut any kind of hair. The official word from owner Mattie Michelle:
“When I started doing hair 12 years ago, I noticed that the salon industry was very segregated. Most stylists are trained to serve only certain textures of hair. But, at Michelle Patrick Salons, it doesn’t matter whether you’re black, white, Asian, Hispanic or some blend thereof. We love the look of diversity. So, all our clients walk away with super-fierce styles that express their own personal star-quality.”
I’ve got it. Yep. I said it. The whole world knows now. Benzoyl Peroxide. Tazorac. Differin. Minocycline. Doxycycline. Tetracycline. I’ve tried it all—well, mostly—and nothing made much headway. I’d lost hope in treatment and invested it in concealing cosmetics. (As for that, I recommend Jane Iredale’s PurePressed base—great coverage, light feel, mineral powder.) But Renée Rouleau, a true skincare expert, has restored my optimism that clear skin is not an unobtainable goal. I think I may be on the path to recovery. Jump to find out how and why.
I started yoga a couple of weeks ago with my husband and my friend Susie. We have been attending Bishop Arts Yoga, and we love it! The studio is small and welcoming. Instructor Steven Grillo is knowledgeable and helpful. He doesn’t even get angry that I can’t do tree without falling over or that I have the attention span of a goldfish. Why should you be interested? He is offering a one-year unlimited plan for only $699 until Sept. 30th. That’s a pretty sweet deal! Don’t want to commit without trying out the studio? He offers a 10-day intro plan for just $10.
Sadly, we lost three more contenders. So it’s down to the final 14 in D Beauty’s 10 Most Beautiful Women in Dallas competition. Vote once a day, every day, to make sure your favorite girl wins!
As you know, I’ve been trying out all the cosmetics the IsaDora company sent me and thanks to them I have found the perfect brown eye shadow palette. Actually, they call it “Eye Shadow Palette 122550 Matte Chocolates” but who needs technicalities, just follow the link to purchase it. I can’t really say anything more. Just look at the photo and you’ll see that it has varying shades of neutral beiges and browns from light to dark. Every girl needs quality basics and this is just the thing. Browns work day or night and on all skintones, and can provide a natural look or a sexy, glam look. You can even use them with colored shadows to keep the color from looking too clown-ish. Check out this article in the summer issue of D Beauty to find out how.
