Re: JCPenney + The Breakfast Club

So it looks like that heinous JCPenney commercial struck a nerve with some of you, too. Well, as a treat to the nostalgia lovers out there, here’s a shot of a real-time Breakfast Clubber. Can’t you just smell 1985? Eric Celeste, you’ll always be my ’80s fashion hero. And, hey, don’t you forget about me.

Neiman Marcus Last Call Begins Today

We’ve been so busy over here that I almost forgot that Neiman’s biggest sale of the season (Last Call) begins today. August 5 -10 save up to 75% off original prices on Spring/Summer merchandise all over the store including women’s and men’s apparel, shoes handbags, home and gifts. I’m there as soon as I can get out the door.

Nutrition on the Go: It’s a Textual Thing

Before you get in that drive-thru line during your next rushed lunch break, you might want to check out Diet.com’s Nutrition on the Go tool. By sending a text message to DIET1 (or 34381), you can receive nutritional info on more than 36,000 foods from 1,700 restaurants. For example, I typed in “Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich” and found out that one of my favorite fried guilty pleasures has 410 calories, 16 grams of fat, 38 grams of carbohydrates, and 28 grams of protein. The service is free, but if you’re like me and you went over on your text messaging plan last month by 189 texts, you should think before you type. Go here for an interactive demonstration that won’t count toward your texting budget. But be warned: it’s kind of addictive. Like that blasted chicken sandwich.

Couture Lashes

Ooh, so exciting! Viktor & Rolf have created three radical new lash styles for the Shu Uemura lash bar at Neiman Marcus. My favorite is ”Swirl” (see below). They may seem extreme but with subdued make-up and a simple hair style they’ll look sexy and elegant. Watch for them in September, just in time for all those holiday parties. Now you can have designer lashes to match your designer dress, designer shoes and designer bag! Perfection.

Next Stop Gypsyville

Here at ShopTalk, we mostly like to chat about Dallas-area designers and retailers. But we have mad love for Texas style makers, too. Example: The Junk Gypsy Company based out of College Station. These funky couture crafters (led by two sisters and their mom) create shirts, jewelry, and home goods that never fail to make me smile. Their brand of road-warrior, chicks-rock, shabby-chic designs are for the kind of girl who wants to stand out from the crowd. Who doesn’t love that? Right now the Gypsies are spreading the word about their appearance at Warrenton Antiques Week, where the gals will be selling their original stuff along with a slew of cool vintage goodies. Anybody up for a road trip?

“Best Gym In America” To Open On Oak Lawn

Equinox Fitness, voted the Best Gym in America by Fitness magazine in 2007, is scheduled to open this spring just south of Highland Park. I must say, I was intrigued by what the best gym in America might have to offer, so I calls up the recently-opened membership presales office (214-443-9009, for interested parties) and I says, what have you got that all these other guys ain’t got? And he says, and I’m paraphrasing here, “everything.” Among its amenities, the 45,000-square-foot high-end club has a yoga studio, pilates studio (with pilates equipment), 18 x 25 yard pool, cycling room, 5,400-square-foot muscle endurance area, and 90 pieces of cardio equipment. To that I say, cue the music.

Betsey Johnson Anniversary Party

Don’t miss the Betsey Johnson anniversary party this Thursday, August 7th from 4-7pm at the Dallas Galleria Betsey Johnson store. There will be lots of goodies and a chance to win a limited edition autographed t-shirt! And if you spend $400 or more you’ll get a free gift with purchase (while supplies last, of course). Woo hoo!

JCPenney + The Breakfast Club = Boo!

Am I the only one bothered by JCPenney’s new back-to-school ad campaign in which the Plano-based company re-creates scenes from The Breakfast Club? Come on, people, this is a classic film, and you’ve tampered with it! I mean, I understand that it’s not Sixteen Candles we’re talking about here. That would be, like, totally wrong. (Jake Ryan forever!) But TBC didn’t deserve this. Did John Hughes approve? Does this mean I’m old? Do other children of the ’80s feel me on this one? Watch the commercial here and let me know if it’s as cringe-worthy as I think it is.

Beat the Heat at Mokara

Funny how, even though I’ve lived here most of my life, I’m always surprised at how hot it gets every summer. While hiding out in a movie theater or a mall is the way most Dallasites cope with triple digits, I think I’d rather head to Mokara Salon & Spa for a 75-minute cool stone massage–a twist on the old hot stone massage and one of a handful of  spa treatments geared toward cooling down. Another winner is the resilience firming treatment. I’d go just to get drenched in a head-to-toe cool gel, but the gel’s marine ingredients are said to promote firmer skin, so you’ll also leave feeling svelte.

Innovations Med Spa Gets New SmartLipo MPX

Innovations MedSpa, with locations in Fort Worth, Grapevine, and Dallas, is the first med-spa in Texas and the only one in Dallas to have the new SmartLipo MPX machine, the latest technology in laser liposuction, which works by distributing heat evenly to melt away fat. Innovations also received the new SmartSense handle, ensuring constant energy during the procedure–which, in layman’s terms, means it’s safer for you. Cost: $2,500-$3,500 per area.

ShopTalk is a daily discussion among the D Magazine and D Beauty editors about the Dallas fashion and beauty scene. Think of it as an online coffee klatsch, with virtual coffee served. We girls like to gab about the latest beauty products, insider shopping tips, health and fitness trends, style tips--essentially everything the in-style, on-the-go Dallas girl must know to keep up appearances.
